Mesta village is located 35 kilometres from the centre of Chios town and is the most distant medieval village of south Chios. It is considered one of the most well preserved villages of Chios Island. The village was built during the Byzantine period (14th, 15th century) and it is famous for its unique architecture according which, the houses were built strictly the one next to the other without gaps and there were only two gates in order to enter the village. The village’s alleys are quite narrow and most of them have an arch right above them. The village is built as a labyrinth in order to make the pirates lose their orientation and would not reach to the centre of the village, where were the most important buildings. The locals used the roofs of their houses to move along without being noticed by anyone. The village was constructed as a square fortress, with corner structure. Nowadays, you can see traces from murals and many shops with old things and antiques that give an additional tone to the village scenery. You can visit the exceptional beauty wooden carved church icon screen (Chios woodcarving) of 1833 as well as the Royal church of Old Taxiarchis. At Mesta village every year the custom "Aga" takes place. The custom has roots in the Ottoman era (1830-1840 AD) and satirizes the trials of the Turks at that time, as they were done in the Ottoman period.
The port of Mesta village is just 4 kilometers far from the village.
