The Cavern of Olympi is located 8km. in the south of the medieval village of Olympi. It was explored in 1985 by the Greek Speleological Society. From the year 2003 onwards it is open to the public.
The dating of several samples of carbonate materials cave, from the Laboratory of Nuclear Physics "Demokritos" showed that the oldest of them was created over 230 thousand years. It is an impressive cave that has a maximum depth of 52m. It consists of a large, spacious room with apparent detachment stalactites and new ones which are creating, with extremely rich and impressive decoration and a narrow, elongated corridor.
From the natural entrance which is located in the ceiling of a large hall, light beam enters and in combination with the natural colors of formations creates magical images which are rarely encountered in caves.
The temperature (17oC) and humidity (95%) inside the cavern remain almost constant over time whereas the drop flow varies seasonally.
