Agia Markela

Agia Markella cover new

Description

The beach of Agia Markela, 45 km's north by the city of Chios and 6,5 km's from the village of Volisos, owes it's name to the homonymous monastery of the area. Each and every year on the 22 of July takes place the celebration day, a public holiday for Chios, gathering domestic and -not only- pilgrims, as by a version of the tradition, Agia Markela martyred here, is the patron saint of the island. Her illustration ia considered to be miraculous.  It has been testified that during the celebration day while the priest chants the gospels, at the specific point sea water boils.

The big and impressive beach that expands in front of the monastery offers the visitor black sand, cold and deep waters and a marvelous view towards the historical isle of Psara.

From the northern part of the beach, between the sea and steep rocks, initiates a narrow path toward Agiasma, the point where Agia Markela martyred. A unique distinctive element of this beach is the peculiarly hot waters.
