Kardamila is a big village located at the northeastern parts of Chios island, 27 kms by the city of Chios (or else Hora).

During the past , the place-name Kardamila was used commony to describe both Ano ( upper ) Kardamila, located at a distance by the sea, and also for the smaller settlement Rahi. Ano Kardamila or else Ano Village is one of the biggest an oldest villages to be found around the island of Chios. The village expands at the fromthe  location of ancient city Kardamili to the hill of Grias, whom it consists a natural acropolis. The etymology of it's name points out to an ancient greek bread type, made by barley flour.

According to traditions during middle ages, existed many different smaller settlements scattered through the area, which, as had also happened in other various cases in the history of the the island, were united due to the constant threat imposed by incoming pirate raids. From the year 1800 and after, historians agree that at that area exists  only one big settlement with a common name. Indeed, the elders inhabiting the village at the beginnings of the 20th century recalled that the village used to have sixteen separate neighbourhoods or parishes that were corresponding to ''choridia'', the small settlements and the relative families that formed it. After the destruction of Chios island on 1822, are mentioned only four neighbourhoods.

Despite the existence of a small fertile valley between the todays two settlements, locals reached out since the ancient times towards the sea and the commerce. It seems that a great role for this turn, played the existence of two different deep bays in the area, Marmaro and Parpanton. Over the generations, Kardamila emerged numerous and important shipowners families.

The village is characterised by it's traditional architecture, combibing narrow streets, pebbly alleys and stone-built houses. At it's small square can be found the Sailor of Kardamila, a statue made by the famous sculptor Apartis. In the surrounding area one can find hotels and rooms to let , since Kardamila during the summer months is bustling with life. Taverns and restaurants by the port, await the visitor to offer unforgetable tastiness and hospitality.
