Description

The Byzantine Museum of Chios is hosted at the Ottoman mosque of Metzitie that was built after the benefaction of Sultan Abdul Mezit around middle 19th century at the square of the city of Chios.  It consists of wooden roofed pre-entrance, the main hall that is covered by dome and a spacious basement. At it's pebble paved yard exist, at symetrical position, two similarly shaped stonebuilt structures. One of those served as a fountain and the other serves today as a place of audiovisual material projection.

The restoration of the temple was implemented with the financial support of the European Union. The difficulties for that project were many, but finally was accomplished equally the demonstration of respect towards the memorial character of the building and also it's shaping at a functional museum space ideal to host the permanent exhibition, an exhibition that makes the bulding the same an exhibit. That way the mosque and the exhibition coexist in harmony and are complementing each other.
The exhibit includes four thematic topics. Each topic is commented with texts and optical material of general or specific content. All the exhibits have a bilingual caption.  The visitor has the potential  to wander around the premises freely or either to follow the designated route.
